Tibetan Review and its editors

The first issue of Tibetan Review came out in 1968. Its precursor was 'The Voice of Tibet', founded, edited and published by Mr. Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari, in 1967. Mr Gyari (who was one of the four founders of the Tibetan Youth Congress in 1970 and who had held the office of a Kalon for several years) is now the special envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the executive chairman of the board of the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) in Washington, DC. He also held the position of the President of ICT for several years.

T.N. Takla
From April 1967 Mr. T.N.Takla edited the magazine and changed its name to Tibetan Review with effect from January 1968. The office in these early days was in Darjeeling.

Tenzin Namgyal Tethong
Around 1970-1972, Tenzin Namgyal Tethong, another prominent member of the group of TYC-founders continued publishing the magazine. T.N.Tethong also served as representative of Office of Tibet in New York and directed the International Campaign for Tibet.

Dawa Norbu
During the years, not only the jacket of the bulletin changed but also the editor's chair. In 1973 Mr. Dawa T. Norbu (the author of the excellent book 'Red Star over Tibet') came at the helm. He wrote round five years for the magazine.

Tsering Wangyal
Around 1977 Mr. Tsering Wangyal succeeded to the office. He was the editor of Tibetan Review for the longest period of 19 years. His critical, and sometimes sarcastic essays and editorials, devoid of intellectual pretentions, have become the hallmark of the Review and were responsible for the nick name 'Editor' by which his asquaintances call him.

Tsering Wangyal and Lhasang Tsering
Lhasang Tsering
During the years the magazine grew from a factual bulletin to a wide spread platform for political, social and cultural discussions around Tibet. During the 3 decades Tibetan Review never lost its objectivity and independence. In the year 1986, during Mr. Wangyal's residence in the USA, no less a person than Mr. Lhasang Tsering, former president of the Tibetan Youth Congress and author of many political essays did the editor's job.

Tsering Wangyal
In 1996 Mr. Wangyal wrote his last editorial. He dismissed with a short note written in a modesty, he was known for:

With this issue I am leaving Tibetan Review for personal reasons. The new editor is Mr. Pema Thinley, former executive editor of Tibetan Bulletin, Dharamsala. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the correspondents and contributors who helped me keep the magazine going over the years. I am also grateful to the readers for their patience and support. I would like to request them all to extend the same kindness and cooperation to the new editor. Thank you.
- Tsering Wangyal

Pema Thinley
From the issue of October 1996, Mr. Pema Thinley became the new editor of Tibetan Review. Mr. Thinley was the former Executive Editor of Tibetan Bulletin, the official journal of the Central Tibet Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
